The weekly shop can be a chore at the best of times, let alone when you have to do it with children in tow. Here are some tips on how to shop with kids.
Shop with a list
When you’re shopping with children, it’s easy to get distracted and forget to pick up items you need.
Write out a shopping list in advance and stick to it. Make sure you tick items off as you go so you don’t miss anything. Spend time as a family meal-planning together and writing out all the ingredients.
Before you shop, ensure the children know that only items on the list go in the trolley. You can even let them pick one or two treat items to go on the list. If they didn’t pick something to go on the list, then it doesn’t go in the trolley. This can help you avoid tantrums during the shop.
Make it a game
Turn shopping into a game to make it more interesting for kids. Put them in charge of ticking things off the list or finding items on the shelves. Get them to work out which items are the best value by comparing prices. Let them take it in turns to pick which brand or item you buy; cornflakes or cocoa pops, orange juice or apple juice, red apples or green.
Shop at quiet times
If you can be flexible about when you go shopping, aim for quieter times of the day and week. It will be less stressful for you and the children if you don’t have to fight crowds of shoppers or queue for ages at the checkout.
Hungry children are going to be more irritable and more tempted to ask for their favourite treats. It’s also more tempting for you to overbuy when you’re feeling peckish. Make sure that you feed yourself and the children before you hit the supermarket aisles as you’ll be less attracted to all the tasty food on offer.
Give yourself plenty of time
If you are in a rush and you have children with you, the shopping trip will be even more stressful. Leave yourself plenty of time so that you can deal with any minor meltdowns, find all the items you need, and compare the deals to get the best offers.
We hope the above tips make shopping with kids a little bit easier. Try and make it an enjoyable experience rather than a chore. It can be an easy way to entertain children without having to spend money unnecessarily.
