As the nights get darker and it gets colder outside people crave more warming and filling food like soups, stews and casseroles.  

Enter - the slow cooker; the easiest way to cook wholesome food without breaking the bank. Throw all the ingredients together in the morning and sit down to a great meal at night with almost no effort.  

If you haven’t already got a slow cooker, they’re a good investment.  Argos have a great range starting from just £9.99 and Amazon is also a good place to look, as well as most UK supermarkets. We’ve put together some great slow cooker recipes to give you some ideas.

Irish Stew

Meat, vegetables and a delicious, thick gravy - there’s nothing not to like about this Irish Stew recipe. It’s easy, and the ingredients to make it are things you’re likely to have in your home. Serve with thick crusty bread to make it even more delicious. This recipe serves 8, so will easily do a couple of meals for a family of four.


Chilli is a family favourite and this recipe not only makes good use of a slow cooker, but puts a twist on a classic recipe by using other household staples like tomato soup.


It’s not just evening meals that can be made in the slow cooker; this porridge recipe is a great idea for a hearty and comforting breakfast.  This recipe serves four but if you’ve any left-over put it in an airtight container and reheat on the hob or in the microwave the following morning.


This might not be a dish that you think to use a slow cooker for, but there are loads of great slow-cooker curry recipes.  If you want to have a go at making it from scratch, this recipe looks great, alternatively Schwarz do a great packet mix which you can use.  Any leftovers can be frozen and enjoyed another time.
